Odd Arne Westad er professor i historie ved prestistisjetunge Yale University i USA. Han er spesialist på moderne internasjonal og global historie, med et særlig fokus på Øst-Asias historie etter 1700. Westad har forfattet The Global Cold War: Third World Interventions and the Making of Our Times, som vant Bancroft-prisen og Restless Empire: China and the World Since 1750, som vant bokprisen til The Asia Society. Han bor i New Haven, Connecticut. Når stormen kommer er hans første bok oversatt til norsk.
